Giant Radio Telescope to Be Installed in Nançay
A gigantic low-frequency radio telescope, an instrument designed to capture radio-wave emissions from stars, is being installed at the heart of the Nançay Radio Astronomy Station. It will consist of 1,824 antennas. The aim of the project is to observe the sky with a new and much more sensitive instrument that will rank among the most powerful in the world.
NenuFAR is located on the grounds of the Nançay Radio Astronomy Station, which, in the heart of the Sologne region, brings together France’s radio telescopes. The site is home to the world’s fourth-largest radio telescope, used to observe the universe at wavelengths ranging from 3 centimeters to 10 meters.
At the Nançay Institute, several radio telescopes with different scientific missions are operated. These missions include the detection and study of exoplanets—planets orbiting stars other than the Sun; the detection of the radio signal from the “Cosmic Dawn,” the period when the first stars and galaxies formed, about 100 million years after the Big Bang; and the study of pulsars at low frequencies. Pulsars are dead stars that are extremely dense, rapidly rotating, and strongly magnetized.
In addition, NenuFAR will support many other scientific studies. SOTRALENTZ CONSTRUCTION is supplying the welded mesh panels for this unique project. The inauguration of the new radio telescope is planned for autumn 2020.
